Chiropractors specialise in the diagnosis, treatment and overall management of conditions that are due to problems with the joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves, especially related to the spine. They use a variety of treatment techniques, not just manipulation and tailors each treatment to the individual. Once an accurate diagnosis has been determined, they will establish then the best form of treatment to recommend, whether that is chiropractic, physiotherapy or other therapeutic intervention. If a diagnosis is not possible advise on appropriate further tests such as x-rays & MRI scans will be given and will refer to a GP or consultant as necessary. Chiropractic treatment mainly involves safe, often gentle, specific spinal manipulation to free joints in the spine or other areas of the body that are not moving properly.

Physiotherapists help people affected by injury, illness or disability through movement and exercise, manual therapy, education and advice.

They maintain health for people of all ages, helping patients to manage pain and prevent disease.

The profession helps to encourage development and facilitate recovery, enabling people to stay in work while helping them to remain independent for as long as possible.

Physiotherapists consider the body as a whole, rather than just focusing on the individual aspects of an injury or illness.

Some of the main approaches used by physiotherapists include:

- Education and advice – physiotherapists can give general advice about things that can affect your daily lives, such as posture and correct lifting or carrying techniques to help prevent injuries
- Movement, tailored exercise and physical activity advice – exercises may be recommended to improve your general health and mobility, and to strengthen specific parts of your body
- Manual therapy – where the physiotherapist uses their hands to help relieve pain and stiffness, and to encourage better movement of the body
- Acupuncture – fine needles can be used specifically to reduce pain and restore normal function
- Taping – depending on the type of injury and requirements of the condition, different types of tape, including Kinesio taping, can be used to restore normal function and to prevent conditions recurring through sport and other activities

Sports Massage. Prevention is better than cure.

Sports massage has long been recognised as a valuable intervention in both preventing and treating sports injuries, ensuring that muscles are in the best condition possible, promoting recovery and helping to improve performance.

Sports massage differs from therapeutic massage in that it is a deeper form of soft tissue massage using specific techniques to treat individuals, who may be prone to injury because of the stress placed on the body through sport or other physically demanding activities, or vocations

The Benefits of Sports Massage

Sports massage is effective for releasing muscle tension and restoring balance to the muscular-skeletal system.

Benefits include:

Relaxing tired and aching muscles
Reducing stress and tension in the body’s soft tissues
Improving circulation and lymphatic drainage
Assisting in the removal of metabolic waste
Breaking down scar tissue

An initial consultation will be carried out to determine your present and past health and lifestyle. From this information the practitioner will tailor the massage to meet your health needs.

A course of treatments is usually recommended for optimum results but this will vary depending on your own needs. After care advice will often be provided about what you can do in between treatments to improve your condition.

Sessions last 30 or 60 minutes in duration and can be booked with Mathew Atkins, our level 4 Sports Massage Therapist, on a Wednesday, Friday or Saturday.
